It’s a news story that Cheshire criminal defence lawyers are sure to have followed with a great deal of interest – Oscar Pistorius, who has served just under a year for the killing of model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, is to be released from jail and placed under house arrest.
It’s thought that the athlete will see the rest of his sentence out at his uncle’s house, although he may be allowed to leave the premises if he can find work.
According to the Independent, charity Womenkind Worldwide condemned the decision to release Pistorius, saying that it revealed a lack of value that society places on women.
“Violence against women and girls is a human rights crisis that states are obliged to take action to end. But all too often we see low levels of convictions, short sentences given to perpetrators and survivor-blaming from state officials – all of which send the message that these crimes are not taken seriously,” the trust said in a statement.
Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide in 2013 after he shot Ms Steenkamp dead through a bathroom door on Valentine’s Day.
