A five-year-old boy has been awarded what is thought to be a record amount of compensation for medical negligence after he was left with severe brain damage due to the care he received from midwives.
According to the Argus, Royal Sussex County Hospital will pay £11.5 million in stages in order to provide the boy with a lifetime of care, after his umbilical cord suffered a prolapse, which left him with cerebral palsy affecting all his limbs.
London’s High Court was told that if the child had been delivered 11 minutes earlier, he would have been unharmed.
Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust admitted liability for the incident back in 2012, with midwives being blamed for not noticing the injury or responding to it in time.
This payout will ensure that the boy has access to specialist treatment for the rest of his life, which includes £1 million that has been made available for future education costs.
