Sepsis – The Ticking Clock

What is Sepsis and how can we help you if you’ve not been treated properly?

Sepsis is a life threatening condition caused by the body’s overreaction to an infection; the body’s immune system goes in to overdrive and starts attacking tissues and vital organs.

The infection can come from anywhere, even a small bite or infected cut can cause the infection to travel around the body prompting the immune system to go in to overdrive.

Symptoms

Symptoms of sepsis can include:

  • High fever, shivering or feeling cold
  • Fast heart rate
  • Increased breathing/shortness of breath
  • Confusion
  • Slurred speech
  • Feeling very unwell

For more information on the signs and symptoms of Sepsis see the NHS website:

Treatment

If you suspect that you have sepsis you must act FAST.

Patients with Sepsis should be treated with IV antibiotics within an hour if sepsis is suspected; unfortunately reports are highlighting that this is not always happening and lives are being put at risk.

Research reveals that a quarter of patients are not treated soon enough and if treatment is delayed it can lead to septic shock, amputation, organ failure and death.

It has been reported that the Sepsis Trust estimates that there are approximately 250,000 cases of Sepsis every year in the UK and unfortunately, from this number, over 50,000 deaths.
