What is the legal process of remortgaging?

There are a number of stages but firstly we’ll check that you are the legal owner of the property. After that, we will:

  • Carry out relevant searches - this ensures there are no problems with the property or the surrounding area which might affect your ownership or its value.
  • Check that you understand, and are happy with, the conditions of the new lender.
  • Agree repayment with your current lender - we will arrange to repay your existing mortgage, advising you if there are any penalty payments for ‘paying off’ the mortgage early.
  • Plan for the transaction to take place on an agreed completion date.
  • Register your new lender's interest in your property at the Land Registry.
