What are the likely outcomes from an Inquest?
The Coroner or jury will need to give a verdict which is usually referred to as a ‘short verdict’ – it can be a longer verdict that explains what happened but it is often one of the following verdicts:
- Natural causes
- Accidental death: An unintended or unexpected consequence
- Death by misadventure: An unintended or unexpected consequence but with some criticism of the act (or failure to act)
- Open verdict: where the cause of death cannot be established on the evidence
- Industrial disease
- Neglect: gross failure to provide adequate food, drink or medical attention
- Suicide
- Drugs: the person was on drugs
- Lawful killing: the main example is death caused by self-defence
- Unlawful killing: the person considered responsible will not be named
