How can inheritance tax be avoided?

It is important to know there are many entirely legal ways of making sure those who stand to benefit from your Estate do so – and avoid any unnecessary inheritance tax (‘IHT’).

  • You start by preparing what we call an ‘inheritance tax efficient Will’ – this needs to be very carefully worded
  • You can also make gifts before you die in a way that will save any inheritance tax due
  • You can think about maximising your use of potentially exempt transfers (or ‘PET’)
  • Gifts to your husband, wife or Civil Partner are free of any inheritance tax – if they die before you it may be possible to transfer some of their ‘unused’ tax free allowance to you thereby reducing any tax due when you die
  • There are also special rules covering any gifts you make to charity
  • With larger estates we look at whether we should put some of your property being in to ‘trust’ - this can again be used to save tax but we can explain this in more detail if this applies to you
