Would I be entitled to adopt a child?

Any court has to decide what is in the best interests of the child(ren) affected - and what their wishes are if it is possible to ascertain (i.e. if the child is not too young to explain these). This means that the grounds for the court making an adoption order can appear vague.

Below is some important information to know about adoption:

  • In England and Wales you must be over 21 to adopt a child.
  • You must be living in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or Isle of Man.
  • You can be a single person or a married couple - you cannot adopt if you are part of an unmarried couple.
  • Same-sex couples cannot adopt a child together.
  • Same-sex couples may wish to consider an arrangement where one of the couple adopts the child as a single applicant and the other has what is known as a joint residence order.
  • Finally, the most difficult part of an adoption is often gaining the consent of the birth parents to the adoption - for understandable reasons.
