More about Aberdeen:
Located up on Scotland’s north-eastern coastline just where the Rivers Dee and Don flow into the North Sea, Aberdeen is a ruggedly beautiful town with a surprisingly cosmopolitan population due mostly to its thriving offshore oil and gas operations. The city is renowned for its stunning Victorian architecture and landmark buildings, all of which make fine use of the local granite stone repositories. As well as a great choice of bars, restaurants, theatres and museums, Aberdeen also boasts easy access to breath-taking countryside surroundings which barely conceal a startling array of natural wildlife and man-made open-to-the-public delights including castles, stately homes and of course whisky distilleries.
Aberdeen is known worldwide as the “Granite City”, and with good reason; around 600,000 cubic feet of granite were used in the foundations for the Forth Rail Bridge and the city’s Union Bridge is the largest single-span granite bridge in the world. People have occupied this area around the mouth of the River Don since the dawn of civilisation and there’s a great history of commerce here, in fact the Aberdeen Harbour Board is Britain’s oldest business and was formed back in 1136. North Sea oil and gas have brought much prosperity to Aberdeen, and as a result this beautiful city boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country.
