What tasks need to be carried out to administer an Estate?

The main tasks or responsibilities include;

  1. Valuing the Assets – add in a house and some possessions and investment specialist valuations will be needed to see if tax is payable
  2. Paying for the funeral - where there are sufficient funds, payment for the funeral takes precedent over any other debts
  3. Completing the inheritance tax form – this is a complete record of the Estate which must be sent to HM Revenue & Customs
  4. Collecting the assets - many organisations like banks require a certified copy of the Grant before they release any money to the Estate
  5. Paying any bills and/or debts - where the deceased owed people money these bills need paying and any tax issues need arranging
  6. Recovering any payments due - where the person who died is owed money this needs to be recovered
  7. Transferring the property – this involves usually working with Land Registry to transfer land or property into the name of the person who is to benefit
  8. Making an interim distribution - as the money comes in it is legally possible to pass part of it on to those who are due to benefit
  9. Preparing the Estate account - this is the official record of the Estate and shows what came in, what was paid out and what happened to the rest
  10. Final distribution – making arrangements for the final distribution of the property, possessions and any monies under the provisions of the Will/Intestacy Rules
  11. Tax certificates - providing each person that benefits from the Estate with a tax certificate
