Does the child get a say in what happens?

They do. Before the court makes any decision about a child the judge has to ensure that the child's own wishes are known and taken into account.

In order to do this, the court can appoint an independent solicitor and a children's guardian to do this. Their role is to find out the wishes and feelings of the child - as well as to check what level of understanding the child has about the issues affecting them. The court is always mindful of placing too much pressure on the child as it is often difficult for them. Ultimately a judge must decide what appears to be in the child's best interests.
