What is family mediation and how can it help with the arrangements for the children?
Family mediation is a voluntary process – it is a process where you sit with an independent trained mediator to explore your issues with the aim of reach a voluntary agreement.
Usually mediation discussions are confidential – unless there are issues regarding the child’s safety. Mediation can discuss a wide range of matters - where the child lives, how often they have contact with the other parent or anything that is seen as a worry for the child themselves.
It is important to understand that mediators do not offer legal advice. If an agreement is reached, then each person must then instruct their solicitor to who will need to implement the agreement and all necessary arrangements.
Mediation can often be quicker, less expensive and can reduce tensions and long term harm to relationships by focusing on what is actually ‘in dispute’, rather than the emotions of the situation.
