What orders can a court make when sorting out the arrangements for children?

There are a range of orders available to the court which only applies until the child reaches 16. They include;

  • A residence order – this says who the child will live and is often shared
  • A contact order – this says how often and what the arrangements are in terms of any contact with the child
  • A Prohibited Steps order – this sets out certain ‘steps’ that cannot be taken such as taking the child abroad or changing the child's name or school
  • A Specific Issue order – this says precisely how a particular issue should be dealt with such as obtaining permission for a holiday or in respect of medical treatment
